The AFMC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. To keep our expenses as low as possible, we do not have any salaried employees. Everyone who works at this clinic, does so as a non-paid volunteer.
AFMC needs licensed healthcare provider volunteers (MDs, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Licensed Vocational Nurses) and staff volunteers. Front-line staff volunteers work with patients in care delivery, while the back-office staff volunteers work on AFMC’s systems and administration.
AFMC offers so much practical care delivery experience for staff volunteers that want to make a career in healthcare. Staff volunteers receive comprehensive EHR training, the ability to take patients' vitals, work directly with underserved patients over the phone and in person, opportunities to take leadership roles within the clinic, and learn more about pharmaceutical terminology. They also get to work and learn from dermatology, ENT, physical therapy, mental health, and internal medicine physicians. The opportunity to serve people that cannot afford medical insurance is a source of special satisfaction and joy for provider volunteers.
There are many considerations that apply for volunteering at AFMC:
We are always in need of licensed healthcare provider volunteers.
A large proportion of the people we serve speak only Spanish. Our most critical need is for front-line staff volunteers is for those that speak both English and Spanish.
Our need for staff volunteers varies from time to time. We may not have any openings when you apply, but we can keep your application on file and get in touch with you when an opportunity opens up.
For our front-line staff volunteers, we look for 8 AM to 12 PM commitment every Saturday plus 1 to 2 hours during the week. Minimum length of commitment we look for is 6 months but we prefer 12 or more months of commitment. We are more flexible in the level of commitment for licensed healthcare providers and back-office staff volunteers.
Due to the nature of the operations of the Clinic, we are unable to take on volunteers who are less than 18 years of age, unless their parent is volunteering at the Clinic regularly as a healthcare provider or in a leadership role.
